When installing continuous hinges, we follow a meticulous process to ensure the best results for our clients. Each hinge has different clearances and installation needs.
We include the max door thickness for each application plus the door swing.
We receive the hinges approximately one inch to 1 5/16 inches shorter than the door height. It helps with carpet clearance and threshold concerns. We will trim the hinge shorter if needed.
Here are our general guidelines on the fitting process:
- For new metal door/frame constructions: We check the clearance needed to get the correct size to order on inspection.
We might install mortar guards or wood-to-styrofoam ones to prevent the grout from interfering with the hinge fastener installation process on the frame. - For new wood doors that are site-hung, we will scribe, if necessary, from the latch edge to leave enough thickness for proper hinge fastening.
- If needed, we scribe and cut from the edge of a laminate or wooden door to make it smoother when remodelling it.
We will then prepare the mounting surface to fit the hinges and door:
- We will then ensure the mounting surface is flush against the mounting surface by positioning the hinged top below the header.
- We will then mark the screw hole locations, and for metal frames, we will make pre-drilled pilot holes when using self-drilling screws. For metal frames with a large gauge and wood doors, we will tap and drill all mounting holes before installing the screws.
- Currently, we do not attach the continuous hinge to the frame.
- We then place the hinge open with the hinge door leaf against the door edge to align the rib flush to the door face along the length to center the hinge on the door.
- We will then mark the screw hole locations and drill pilot holes if needed.
- We then attach the hinge using the screws to the door.
Then, we position the door, attach the hinge to the mounting surface, and check if there is a proper swing adjusting as needed.
